We must obey God's commandments
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide
in his love. (John 10:15)
And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. (I John 4:21)
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in
God, and God in him. (I John 4-16)
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (I. John 5:3)
We keep God's commandments by loving him and others
Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all
thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like
unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
(Matthew 22:36 - 22:40)
I. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:3)
II. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is
in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them:
for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and
fourth generation of them that hate me; (Exodus 20:4 - 20:5)
III. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his
name in vain.(Exodus 20:7)
IV. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day
is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy
manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD
made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed
the sabbath day, and hallowed it.(Exodus 20:8 - 20:11)
V. Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth
thee. (Exodus 20:12)
VI. Thou shalt not kill. (Exodus 20:13)
VII. Thou shalt not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14)
VIII. Thou shalt not steal. (Exodus 20:15)
IX. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. (Exodus 20:16)
X. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor
his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. (Exodus 20:17)
Jesus gave us a new commandment
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another
(John 13:34)
Jesus explained the commandments
And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And
he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life,
keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit
adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt
love thy neighbour as thyself. (Matthew 19:16 - 19:19)
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the
gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and
whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. (Revelation 22:14 - 22:15)
We demonstrate our love for God's by obeying his commandments
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. (I. John 5:2)
